With the Treo 700wx, you can experience broadband-like download speeds using Sprint's EV-DO technology. Simply put, everything you need to do your work on the move, and at blazing speeds, has arrived.

Design
Under the hood, the Treo 700wx features 128MB of RAM (60MB available for end user storage) and an Intel XScale 312MHz processor. The design retains the same basic form factor as the Treo 650 with a few changes. Aesthetically, the new Treo has more angular lines and a more professional-looking gray color. At 6 ounces, it's also slightly lighter than its predecessor. The button layout above the full QWERTY keyboard has been changed to accommodate the Windows Mobile 5.0 interface, and the screen sports 240 x 240 resolution.

Like the Treo 650, the top of the 700wx features an expansion card slot for SD, SDIO, and MMC memory and expansion cards, and get this: Unlike the 650, the 700wx supports the Palm Wi-Fi card. Up top there's also an infrared port for line of sight data transfers, as well as a handy switch for turning off the phone's ringer. Below the screen, a five-way navigator controls most of the phone's menus and operating system functions. The left side of the unit features a volume up/down toggle plus a handy user-customizable button that can be assigned to any phone or PDA function. The rear of the unit houses a loudspeaker, as well as the 1.3 megapixel camera unit. A touchscreen stylus can be tucked away on the right side of the phone. Meanwhile, a combined charging, data, and accessory attachment port, called the Palm "multi-connector" is housed on the bottom of the unit, as is a standard 2.5 mm stereo headset jack.

Calling and PDA Features
Like the Treo 650, the Treo 700wx's phone and PDA functions are designed to provide an integrated, seamless experience--only this time it's all handled by Windows Mobile software. The hallmark of the Windows Mobile experience is the "Today" screen that summarizes all the important information you need to make it through the day. Here you'll get message notification, upcoming appointments, dialing functions, and a Google Web searching all in one spot.

As a phone, the Treo 700wx features all the functionality folks expect from a handset, including a handsfree speakerphone, polyphonic ringtones (polyphonic MIDI, MP3, WAV and video ringtones are supported), a vibrate mode, and picture caller ID. Microsoft Office Outlook Mobile combines email, calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes into a single application that seamlessly integrates with the 700wx's phone functions. Meanwhile, headsets, car kits and other wireless peripherals can also be paired with the unit via Bluetooth (the Bluetooth 1.2 specification is supported).

Staying productive on the road is made possible by the Microsoft Office Mobile suite, which includes Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, and PowerPoint Mobile. You also get Picsel PDF Viewer for viewing PDF document attachments, and the File Explorer application makes it easy to browse the files on your 700wx.

Messaging and Internet
The really big news about the 700wx is that it supports Sprint's EVDO mobile broadband service, allowing you to get DSL speeds wherever you have broadband data coverage. And what can you do with all that speed? Surf the Web faster than ever before using the bundled Internet Explorer application, or log into Pocket MSN and check your Hotmail, use MSN Messenger, or browse the MSN Mobile portal. Robust SMS and MMS functionality is built into the Windows Mobile interface, too.

One of the most important tools bundled with the 700wx is Microsoft ActiveSync, which allows you to quickly synchronize your device's tasks, calendars, email, and contacts with your desktop. You also get Exchange ActiveSync, an application that lets you synchronize data with an Exchange server. Syncing can be done via USB, or wirelessly via Bluetooth.

Imaging and Entertainment
Another great feature of the 700wx is that it supports Windows Media playback right out of the box. With Windows Media Player 10, Palm users can finally play streaming and downloaded video and audio content in a variety of formats, even purchased music from "Plays For Sure" supporting stores. You can also keep your tunes loaded on a memory card and listen to stereo sound wherever you roam (requires an optional stereo headset adapter).

The Treo 700wx's built-in camera sees a bump in performance with the ability to take 1.3 megapixel (1280 x 1024) stills. The camera also features a 2x digital zoom, a self portrait mirror, and automatic light balancing. While the camera is great for taking stills, it can also function as a camcorder, allowing you to capture MPEG4 video to the unit's memory. An integrated media application organizes your captured photos and videos.

And last, but certainly not least, the Treo 700wx keeps the fun going when you've got some downtime with great games. Bubble Breaker and Solitaire ship with the handset, but more Windows Mobile games are available.

Vital Statistics
The Palm Treo 700wx weighs 6.0 ounces and measures 4.40 x 2.30 x .90 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 4.5 hours of digital talk time, and up to 360 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the CDMA 850/1900 frequencies, as well as the EV-DO and 1xRTT data frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

Amazing - Better than I ever anticpated

I already had a Sprint PDA, but when I saw this one, decided to upgrade. I saw that it could be used with my SlingBox to play cable TV, PVR, and DVD player on the PDA screen. Sure enough - works perfectly. Easy to set up. Just amazing. Now I can watch TV from my own cablebox whenever I am. Very fast transfer rate.

I also found the keyboard to be quite easy to use. I've had it for a few weeks, and I'm still learning its features, but it has everything I could have asked for. Syncs with my VPN, Bluetooth compatible, and a wonderfully sharp screen.

My husband liked mine so much, we are buying another one for him.
No probelms, great smartphone

I've read some horrible reviews of this. Perhaps if I had read these before I got this it would have set me off. Thankfully, I didn't. This phone has been great for me and great to me. I've never had a problem with
it and it's been dropped about 10 times. I blame that on my case.

==The phone==

At first I was skeptical about how well the phone could work. It doesn't look that functional. The Treo 700wx is easily more functional than my last cellphone. Voices are clear and crisp and I don't have to yell to be heard.

==Windows Mobile 5.0==

Great system. I've never used the Palm equivalent. I've had no crashes or problems. The included software includes Pocket Office and some games. The calendar and the contacts sync with Outlook or a similar program, keeping a backup of both your events and your contacts on your PC, or on your treo, however you want to look at it. I would recommend getting something like Sprite Backup anyway. It also comes packed with Pocket MSN.There are also lots of games that take advantage of Windows Mobile 5.0. The Today screen is helpful, although sometimes I wish I could turn it off. Touch dialing is a great feature, so is the automatic number or contact search once you start dialing. The only downfall here is that if you don't put your phone in standby you might accidentally call someone. I've done that several times and can't help but wonder if that's what the other people's random call were. Also, screen protectors are a must.

==Keyboard==

Having a full QWERTY keyboard is nice, but this is not a viable option for something more than a paragraph or two. You also have to push down the function button to use the keypad. Not a big deal for me. I usually just start typing their name. The two buttons on either side of the navigational pad are one of the things that make the treo great, in my opinion. These in combination with the navigation pad make it so that the treo can be used in one hand without the stylus. If you want to do more than text messaging and the occasional email, though, you need to get a pda keyboard.

==Connectivity==

I have had no problems with bluetooth. I have a headset that I have yet to have a problem with and recently purchaesd Think Outside SBT5ER Stowaway Sierra Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard and iGo MSBTUE Stowaway Bluetooth Mouse. Both of them work great at the same time via bluetooth. The expanded functionality is nothing short of amazing. It basically makes it a miniature laptop. Pocket Office isn't a joke anymore. I can actually type up documents on my treo, save them to my SD card and transfer them to my PC. I could even email them if I felt so inclined. With an SDIO (this IS SDIO compatible, by the way)Wi-Fi card, this is indeed a possibility. Find a hotspot and get connected to the web. No more paying for virtual dialup. Use a wireless connection for free. Make sure your phone is turned off when you do though, or you might use your dialup anyway. You can also connect to your computer through bluetooth if your computer is bluetooth compatible. Eliminates the need for a cable sync, but uses batteries.

==Battery Life==

I have had no problem with the battery life. It lasts a long time. I've gone a couple weeks without charging, only taking it with me when I go out somewhere. Keep in mind that the treo is never really turned off. The only way you can completely turn it off is to take the battery out. Things like bluetooth drain the battery quicker. I haven't used bluetooth that much, usually misplacing my headset, so my battery lasts longer than someone who keeps better track of their headset. There are also extended batteries for those who need it.

==Screen==

It's a decent screen. Crisp colors. It can display digital pictures great, especially the 2 megapixel photos it takes. It can get pretty bright when you have it turned all the way up. It is hard to see in the sun though, but not enough for me to take the score down.

==Camera==

The camera is a cellphone camera. What else is there to say? It's no substitute for an actual camera, digital or no. There is no flash, so make sure there is decent lighting. But you can use the pictures you take and assign them to your contacts then put them on speed dial on your today screen. Touch their picture to dial. Their picture also comes up whenever they call you. Standard feature for a phone with a camera though.

==Overall==

A great device. I would recommend this to anyone. Very easy to get used to. A little on the bulky side, but it more than makes up for it with performance. It's durable as well. Like I said, I've dropped it plenty of times. A little cosmetic damage, but nothing that affects performance at all. Although I now make sure he's strapped into his case securely whenever I put him back in.

==Things to be wary of==

-Incompatible devices - nothing sucks more than buying something then finding out it doesn't work.
-Screen protectors - I know I told you to get some, just make sure they don't get under the edge of of the case on the side of the screen. This will disable the touchscreen functionality.
-Cases Depending on your needs you will need specific things from a case. Make sure it protects your screen WITHOUT impeding your use of it. If you're clumsy like me, make sure it will absorb shock from a drop, not just look pretty and keep it attached to you. And make sure it will keep it attached to you if that's what it's supposed to do.
-Your service plan - Make sure you won't get charged extra before you use the built in modem. It's good in a pinch though.

I hope this helps you. And if you decide to buy a treo, be sure to check out some of the treo sites out there and get advice on what accessories to buy, because with a phone like this, accessories can make your experience SO much better!

Now I am using this phone over 2 months and have following obeservations
1. Sprint internet is pretty fast and cheap too.
2. Touchscreen is great
3. I downloaded google maps and that works great on this phone. very very helpful.
4. The phone is very easy to use. making calls, accepting calls, searching contacts its all on the first screen.
5. Outlook Calendar is good.
6. The drawbacks are that its little bulky and you cannot save a new contact from a saved number. you have to write it again which can be little annoying.

I have not used any other pda before so cannot make comparisons but I like this phone
Anyone who rated this poorly is most likely...

technology illiterate.

The 700wx is incredible. I have had ZERO problems with it. There are no problems texting people on Verizion or T-Mobile. Mine has never crashed once. I've installed some incredible 3rd party software with no problems.
People complain about the screen resolution, but trust me it looks fine.

People hate what they can't understand.
Great Gadget that has more functionality that the iPhone

Here's my humble review about the Palm Treo 700wx (through Sprint)
I cannot say enough great things about this phone. There are other phones that have a better weight, better keyboard, but overall this is in my opinion, one of the best broadband smartphone available today. I have previously owned the POCKET PC 6700 and the new T-mobile DASH.

While the new iPhone has a bigger wow factor and display features, KEEP IN MIND THAT YOU CANNOT EVEN CUT AND PASTE with the iPhone! You cannot download any programs neither from Apple or third party software, these two limitations are enough to keep my respect for my treo 700wx.

To me the choice of this phone was very simple: find the fastest broadband carrier in the U.S. at the lowest price. SPRINT is the only one that fits that criteria. CINGULAR and T-MOBILE EDGE "fast" network is not so fast (only double dial-up speed). I love T-mobile, the best customer service on the planet, but they lost me on the $30/month for 150 KBPS download speeds.
AT&T offers the same phone but charges you nearly $40/month just for data!
Sprint is only $15/month for very fast data (near DSL speed).

DON'T BE FOOLED when you see certain devices that have WINDOWS MOBILE 5 Operating System.. Some have WM5 (POCKET PC edition and some have SMARTPHONE edition) the smartphone edition is much more limited. For example, I owned the T-mobile DASH for a few weeks. You couldn't even CUT AND PASTE text! There was no word processor whatsoever, not even a notepad program. You have to buy it extra.

Palm has put its own cool tweaks to the existing Windows OS, so that the result is an even niftier, more user friendly, intuitive machine.

If you click on Start and Help in any given screen, you can get context sensitive help wherever you are.. or you can search the Help sections.

I also signed up for the $10/month TELENAV GPS service. You MUST have a bluetooth GPS receiver however to have this service work on the phone. By that I don't mean the standalone GPS units.. but a GPS receiver which is about $100 and the size of a pager (no screens). I have the BT-339 with the classic the SiRFstarIII(tm) architecture and it has worked pretty well with the TeleNav service.

I downloaded for about $20 Pocketstreamer which is a software program that is able to do an excellent job at streaming tens of radio and TV stations from around the world including channels such as ABC NEWS, MSNBC RADIO, tons of music and talk radio channels. Unlike MobiTV, this is a one time price for the software and no subscription required. MobiTV I hear is very good, but it's $10/month.

PROS:

* Stable
* Extremely intuitive
* Flexible
* MS OFFICE SUITE (with ability to edit WORD DOCUMENTS etc.)
* Fast processor
* SD/SDIO slot
* Broadband EVDO Speeds around 400 KBPS
* On Demand Web Portal from Sprint
* MUCH BETTER THAN POCKET PC
* Ability to stream many radio stations without trouble
* Has a stylus but is not stylus dependent

* GPS DEVICE READY.. IT DOESN'T HAVE A BUILT IN GPS (EXCEPT for 911 emergency chip) but it has settings to accept and make it easy to add a GPS device..etc.

* Ability to successfully stream radio broadcasts on Windows Media Player
___________________________________________________
CONS:
* Small keyboard .. it takes a little while (few days) to find a position that suits your hands..but I've found a decent comfortable fit.

* A bit on the heavy side. This is not a "slim" type design, but they had to put a good battery that lasts and it does well for battery life.

* No wifi (but EVDO makes up for it) You won't really need wifi if you have broadband connections wherever you are.

* CDMA phone (won't work internationally as opposed to a GSM phone)
* Windows Media Player often is not successful at opening webpages that have a windows media file.. which is not a problem of this particular phone, but most devices running Windows Mobile 5.
